Documentary Preschool Photography
I see the educators at my daughter’s preschool often taking pictures to include in the development folders or learning journals of their preschoolers so it is clear there is no shortage of images within a preschool context. While these images will tell the story of one child, or a small group of children as they play and learn together, they aren’t able to capture the whole preschool or to highlight what really makes your preschool special. There just isn’t time in the busy day of a preschool director or staff to get the kind of images that showcase your own preschool. This is where I come in.
Using the same approach I photograph families with, I’ll spend a whole or half day at your preschool photographing the day as it unfolds. There is no need to change any plans or accommodate me in any way. We speak briefly beforehand so I can have a rough idea of how the day is structured and what times you’d like me there but otherwise the session happens alongside your normal day.
A documentary photography session at your preschool provides a suite of images that have a variety of uses. Some ideas include
- in your newsletter to inform parents the many ways their child is learning through play
- on your preschool website and printed marketing
- in a social story to help familiarise new students with their preschool days
- as a beautiful photobook for families to view when they enquire or visit
An unexpected piece of feedback I have received was that an educator saw just how much she did accomplish in a day and and how the children look at her through the day helped her feel valued.
The preschool will receive high resolution digital downloads of the final files. A photobook of the day is also included in full day bookings.
They can also be used as a fundraiser with a 10% commission on sales to the preschool if I am able to sell prints to families.

Parents and children have loved looking through the photo book. It was interesting watching the kids quickly warm to Penelope, request photos from her and then almost forget she was there after a while as they continued to play.
Preschool Portraits
With an aim to get natural smiles and laughs out of the children at your preschool, I will make sure that each child is comfortable. If this means letting them play and snapping them while they are on equipment or engrossed in an activity I am more than happy to accommodate. I have taken portraits at a preschool that has an Early Development Program where some children may find posing for portraits, and the interuption to the routine, distressing, My documentary approach to photography is very useful here as the children are able to continue their normal day and I find opportunities for beautiful portraits without needing to interfere.
Preschools can choose between a traditional portrait with a backdrop, a portrait in your yard or one taken while each child is playing with a set up selection of activities.
There are cashless options available for preschools who prefer no cash handling (just let me know when enquiring so I can be sure to send out the right order forms).
The preschool receives a 10% commission on sales as a thank you for hiring me as well as complimentary staff photos (individual and group) and copies of each class photo. Two starting packages are also available to the preschool to discreetly select families who cannot afford portraits but would love them.
Packages start at $20 and class photos are only $10
