I have always wanted to be a philanthropist. While I definitely do not have the ability to make “a generous donation” the size that a philanthropist can, I am going to start giving more than a $25 donation to sponsor my cousin in his Multiple Sclerosis cycling event. If I sit around waiting to earn the big bucks, my small bucks that can make a difference won’t get out there either. So, as the saying goes, “There is no time like the present.”
I know I want to donate my time and skills to Heartfelt, an organisation who provide photographic sessions to families who experience stillbirths, premature births or have children with serious or terminal illnesses. I am a
bit of a huge softie* and so think I need to wait until my two are at school so I have time to process the experience and to the be truly available to the families.
* I get all choked up and teary in Tinkerbell and the Legend of the NeverBeast when they put Gruff to bed. ‘Nuff said.
I was trying to think of other ways I can use my creative side to contribute to an organisation or cause I believe in. Then it came to me – Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia! Many years ago, my parents gave me a copy of The Hospital by the River and I was in awe of the work, care and legacy of Obstetric Drs Reg and Catherine Hamlin. You can learn more about the work on at their website but I will detail little bits here for you. The doctors began to provide operations to correct obstetric fistula injuries and, in time, have set up several hospitals dedicated to this work, post care facilities and a midwife clinic to ensure there are trained midwives to prevent fistula from occurring in the first place.
Maternity and newborn photography sessions are part of the services I offer and so it seemed fitting to me that a portion of those sessions be directed to Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia. This isn’t skimming off my profits, I don’t make much of an income from my photography once expenses are taken out. This is because I believe wholeheartedly in the holistic care these doctors provide and the life-changing systems they have set up.
I will be creating an Everyday Hero account to provide the funds so you can keep track and make sure I am keeping my end of the bargain. $600 funds one operation. My target will be one operation but would love to exceed that.
If you are already familiar with the Hamlin Fistula organisation, or have followed the link above and feel the same way I do, please share my Facebook page or this post with anyone who is pregnant or has recently had a child. Encourage them to book a session with PK Photography and together we can help the organisation continue their amazing work.
