I love my job. There are amazing people who allow me in to their home at what is quite a vulnerable time, first-time parenthood. As cliched as it sounds, they open their hearts to me when they open that door. By the end of a documentary newborn session, I have likely witnessed some skin to skin contact with their baby, breastfeeding and all the exposure that goes with learning the art and skill of providing this natural nourishment, heard voices crack or grabbed a tissue for tears as birth stories or this all consuming love are relayed to me or supported them through some of the tougher aspects of life with a newborn. It is such a special time, those early weeks with your baby and I am truly so grateful to anyone who invites me in to this sacred space. To document these days that are hard to recall as your baby grows. Newborns are seriously awesome little creatures. Jupiter was the most adorably squeaky munchkin I have had the pleasure of photographing. In planning their session, Jupiter’s parents wanted me to document the following, some of which appear below: * Changing her nappy/clothes because she doesn’t like it so […]
Introducing Luca. This newborn shoot was booked in quite a hurry as Luca is already 4 weeks old (oh how time flies when you are on the rollercoaster of New Parents!) when his mother got in touch for photos. While we weren’t able to get some of the ‘typical’ newborn photos on the day, it was still such a lovely photo session. The final images were very well received by his parents which is what drives my passion for photography.
I love family and toddler photo sessions. I always ask parents to bring along a favourite toy or two if their photo session is at a location other than their home. It is those aspects of their childhood that I want to capture as well. It is these less formal photos of the children going about their daily lives or with a special toy that I feel will be treasured just as much, if not more, than the more posed images. NB: Some have the faces cropped out or I deliberately chose images without faces as they are from old photos and I haven’t obtained permission from their parents to post the photos on my blog.
Ah, newborns. Master F was a tiny little one. This photo session was his first time out and about since getting home from the hospital and he handled it all so well! Newborn feet will always be my favourite part to photograph. He was so alert at times, soaking in the sights. Other times he slept so soundly.
