I eagerly await the news of any newborn but especially when I will get to photograph them. Even more so when they are my new nephew!
As with all my Captured documentary sessions, in the lead up to this session I was in touch with the parents via a questionnaire and over the phone to establish what they would like documented. We are mostly at the whim of the baby in these sessions but I had noted down the things we mentioned with the aim to get as much of it as I could in our time together. One thing we didn’t get to fit in was a walk to the park that featured in their Captured | Our Maternity Story session. And big brother wasn’t too interested in hanging out with his little brother just yet, he was having too much fun playing with his new Tree Fu Tom toy and his cousins (until the bath started getting filled that is!)
There are so many things I love about in-home newborn sessions. There is less stress because you aren’t racing to a studio between feeds or delaying a feed til you get there so they sleep well for the session. Also, it isn’t vital they happen in that ‘under two weeks old’ window that most studios use as a cut off for newborn portraits. You don’t have to go anywhere, we capture what unfolds in the few hours I am around and a baby is considered newborn for 4 weeks so we have a bit more time for you to get your head around parenting (or new additions) before you find yourself in front of my lens. You can really see those points come across in these pictures.
For this session, though not all shown here, I documented:
* asleep in the cot
* a nappy change
* some play time
* a bath
