Hawkesbury Show rides and sideshow alley games

Hawkesbury Show rides and sideshow alley games

May 10, 2018 //  by Penelope Hale

This year I am participating in a blog circle where an international group of photographers post 10 images from the previous month on the 10th (get it – 10 on 10).  To keep the circle going, head to the link at the bottom of the page and check out some serious talent!

I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy S9 so all the shots in this month’s 10 on 10 are from that phone and then edited with the Snapseed app.

We went to the local annual show in our old stomping grounds, the Hawkesbury Show.  We were in the area due to my exhibition at a gallery in the Blue Mountains so decided to take the girls.  It was quite a different experience to when I went as a kid when we went to see the animals, craft and baking displays while dodging the rides and sideshow alley.  The girls were so tired from all their rides and sideshow games that we headed home before getting so much as a whiff of manure.

Winners, step right up!

Let the rides begin!

I know the crazy person who those legs belong to.  This rides swung around on a pendulum while the seats flipped you around and the set of seats spun as well.  I was almost sick just watching it.  Compare that with the elephant ride that didn’t go fast enough  and I felt like i was encroaching on the carnival workers’ homes 😀  Also, food break.

While the inflatable balls on water was by far the show favourite for the girls, Olive did NOT like inflating process.  At all.

The weather started out pretty bleak and I was worried we would get rained out (trampoline ‘ride’ was the first stop) but as you can see in the rest of the images the sky cleared right up.  In fact, we got too hot!

Make sure you continue your way around the blog circle to see the rest of the 10 on 10 talent!  Next up in the circle is Anna Hurley with her 10 on 10 blog post.

I should have taken photos of them crashed out in the car… aaaaand I was too busy eating fairy floss with them to get any pictures of that. I feel like I really struggle to shoot my own day so thanks 🙂

Thanks Jenn! I was going to lug the heavy dSLR with me but decided against it in favour of just spending the time with them. But whipped out my phone every now and then for a few keepsakes of the day. I have taken my dSLR places before and barely brought it out so it was a good day to test if the phone was a ‘good enough’ alternative. On this phone, having full control of the shutter speed and ISO settings plus two aperture choices definitely makes it a decent thing to carry around. My old phone I could pretty much only turn the flash on or off.
